UG launches youth friendly, civil education website

A new, exciting and interactive social media service targeting young Guyanese and providing information on a range of issues was launched in Georgetown last Friday. According to a release from the Centre for Communication Studies at the University of Guyana, Generation G is ground breaking as it is the first such initiative to be under taken in Guyana.

The project, which has been in development for over a year, is managed by young people and addresses several important issues including health, community participation, environmental issues and entertainment.

According to its founders, the service, which revolves around the Generation G website, was launched live at the stroke of midnight. Generation G involves a series of communication initiatives aimed at educating young people and utilises new media to disseminate information about civic education in a youth-friendly manner.

It is also designed to stimulate thought and discussion about the importance of youth in the democratic process.

“Generation G underscores the importance of youth getting involved in civic activities which will have an effect on their future,” the release said.

It stated that the web site is a non-partisan initiative which is not intended to promote any political group or agenda.

The service is highly interactive and young people are encouraged to visit the site for any information they need regarding Guyana’s electoral and other civic processes.

They can also post their own stories, comments and questions on the site. These will be channeled to the relevant bodies for responses.

There are also weekly competitions and games on the site and young people living outside of Georgetown are encouraged to participate.

Generation G also hosts a resource section for students conducting research or for those who are simply interested in civic matters. “It is hoped that the Generation G project, though currently in its pilot stage, will evolve in the long term into a multi-faceted civic education tool,” the released added. The website is linked to a face book page “Generation G” and can be accessed at www. GenerationG. org. gy.
